In a post on the blog Beyond the Lens, Tedd Tramaloni, Business Development Manager for Production Switchers and Video Servers at Ross Video, shared the challenge encountered with a proposal from a new client. This client proposed to Ross the design of a production truck approximately 16 meters long. Their frustration lay in how to optimize all the equipment and ensure that all the technology could fit effectively into the confined space. Thus, Ross emphasizes the three most important words for a mobile production unit designer: size, weight, and power.
Size, Weight, Power
Although the maximum dimensions of a mobile production unit are regulated, depending on each country's laws, these are almost always insufficient to accommodate all the equipment needed for large-scale events, requiring additional units. Like the dimensions, weight is also regulated. To reduce it, aluminum load structures can be used as lighter alternatives. Finally, the power required to operate broadcast equipment is becoming less problematic, although still a concern, as equipment is increasingly more efficient, consuming less energy.
Solution
According to Ross, the solution lies in simply increasing density. Ross named this solution hyperconvergence, which involves replacing single-use equipment with multifunctional, compact equipment. Examples include the Ultrix Acuity and Ultrix Carbonite systems, which create efficient solutions that take up less space and consume less power, converging the functionality of routing and video switchers into a single piece of shared-resource equipment. In addition to shared inputs/outputs, integrated multiviewers (both routing and switcher) and processing features—color, audio, format, sync, and others—enhance the equipment's functionality without compromising the flexibility and operational capacity required by a mobile production.
